FWPD Charge Driver After Road Rage Shooting

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Fort Worth police are investigating a possible case of road rage. The incident happened Tuesday on Airport Freeway.

According to police a woman told them she was driving when she accidentally swerved into the lane next to her after dropping her phone and reaching down to get it.

The woman said when she swerved into the parallel lane she almost hit a car, later learned to be driven by 26-year-old John Gillett.

"She said she sped up, changed lanes in front of the suspect. The suspect then sped up, drove around, drove up even with the passenger side door of the victim," said Fort Worth police Sgt. Pedro Criado. "She stated that he pulled out a gun and pointed it at her."

It was then the woman tried to protect herself and a gunshot rang out.

"At that point she was in fear for her life so she ducked, slammed on the brakes, and heard a loud crash which was obviously her window shattering," Criado said.

According to police the woman, who was struck by a bullet fragment, pulled off of the highway and called police. It was then that police received another 911 call from a driver claiming to have accidentally shot at a vehicle.

The second driver told police he was parked at a nearby restaurant and waited there until police arrived. When officers arrived the second driver, identified as Gillett, said there was a gun inside his vehicle.

Gillett then told authorities a similar story to that of the first driver, but said when he pointed the gun out his window he had accidentally pulled the trigger.

Gillett was arrested and has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
