FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Changes are in the works for the Fort Worth Independent School District. For the first time, parents will get to decide when their kids are in classes. School calendar changes are topping a board meeting agenda on Tuesday night.

There are two calendars under consideration. And, for the first time, students, parents and staff members were given a chance to vote for which one they liked best. Superintendent Dr. Kent Scribner said, "It's important to listen to our customers. This is the kind of collaboration that will help us more effectively prepare our students for success in college, career and community leadership."

The biggest difference between the two calendars has to do with winter break. In one option, the vacation starts nearly a week before Christmas. In the second option, the break begins just a few of days before the holiday, giving more time off at the start of the new year instead.

The school board on Tuesday night is expected to approve the calendar that received the most votes.

Scribner has only been the Fort Worth ISD's leader since the beginning of this school year, but many of the changes that he is putting into place are already in motion. Also on Tuesday night's agenda, the board will "seek the advice of attorneys" on legal issues related to "potential reduction of force based on program change." That has some people wondering if their jobs will be affected.
