FWISD Board Of Trustees Names Interim Superintendent

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - One week after Walter Dansby abruptly resigned and retired from his post as Superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School District, the Board of Trustees named the next person to hold the job.

Dr. Patricia Linares, a retired educator from North Texas, will be the Interim FWISD Superintendent.

The Board of Trustees appointed Linares in a 8 to zero vote.

Linares is a familiar face to many of the board members, and many educators in Fort Worth. She served as Deputy Superintendent of Fort Worth ISD from 1996 until 2010. She is also a retired teacher and elementary school principal in Dallas.

Trustee Judy Needham says Linares was her first choice for the temporary position. "She has a broad range of knowledge. A number of principals heard her name possibly, and called and said they were thrilled."

While the board unanimously approved the choice, Board President Christine Moss admitted Linares was not her preferred candidate. "We had other candidates that could have done just as well," said Moss, who declined to specify who she preferred to see appointed.

The Board of Trustees will meet this week to discuss the contract and salary for Linares.

Not only must the board set next year's school budget before the end of June, now begins the process of finding a superintendent to replace Walter Dansby.

Dansby will receive more than $900,000 in severance pay and benefits for stepping down. The board unanimously approved the payout Monday night as well.

Dr. Linares is not eligible for the full-time superintendent position.

Moss says the board will also hold a special meeting on Friday to discuss the superintendent job, and the hiring of an outside search firm to assist in the matter.
