FWISD Cautions Football Fans On West Nile
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.com) - It's not Friday night just yet, but football season is back.
Thursday night parents and students were excited to cheer on Carter Riverside versus Pinkson at Farrington Field in Fort Worth.
The smell of popcorn and cheesy nachos filled the stands as football fans watched their first game of the season.
Some admitted they were a little concerned about West Nile and being out at a time everyone is told to stay indoors.
Kick-off was at 7 p.m.
Rebekah Lara came to the game with her one year old daughter, "I worry more about her than myself... I always spray her. Other than this, we haven't been out at night at all."
As concerns over West Nile loomed over the stadium on the scoreboard Fort Worth ISD's message was played a few times during the game.
The new Public Service Announcement tackles the four Ds in 30 seconds:
Dress in long sleeves and pants when outside
Use an insect repellent that contains Deet
Stay indoors at dusk and dawn
Drain standing water around your house
"I'm wearing dark clothes and jeans protecting myself," said Stewart Frazier at the game with his family. "We also use spray when we can."
The district says mosquito traps were set at all their athletic fields and - so far - there have been no positive tests for West Nile.
"I'm worried about it now, but I wasn't before," said student Angelica Gurment "I need to do a better job of using the bug spray."
Fort Worth ISD is now also allowing students to bring mosquito repellent to class with them and use it when needed.
The school board made that call earlier in the week.
