Furloughs Continue To Create Airport Delays
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Travelers must continue to pack their patience before heading to the airport on Tuesday. About 10 percent of air traffic controllers have been furloughed, and that could mean delays at DFW International Airport and other airports across the country.
Fliers started feeling the federal government's budget pinch on Sunday and Monday, as about 3,200 flights were canceled nationwide. Sequestration cuts hit the Federal Aviation Administration and nearly 15,000 air traffic controllers are being forced to take days off without pay to help with $600 million in budget cuts.
DFW Airport is actually faring better than most others across the country, with only about 10 canceled and 80 delayed flights so far. But as summer travel heats up, there will be more people and more waiting.
Transportation authorities said that they did not have any other choice, but others think that reasonable cuts could have been made elsewhere. The pilots union and several other groups are among those trying to stop the furloughs. Their plan is to sue the FAA and seek help from Congress.
