Funeral Held For Sheriff's Deputy Killed In Hood County
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Hood County Sheriff's deputy was remembered today as a natural leader, a devoted husband and a beloved dad.
Family, friends and fellow SWAT team members packed the Hico High School' football field Tuesday morning to honor Sgt. Lance McLean, with the Hood County Sheriff's Office.
McLean was shot in the head last week, while trying to protect a family during a domestic disturbance call. He died one day later. He was the first person to respond to a 911 call at a Granbury home, where gunman Ricky McCommas had been accused of sexually assaulting a female child. McLean was scheduled to be in court that morning, but instead went to the girl's house.
Suspect McCommas was shot to death during a gunfight with other officers near Granbury City Hall.
The funeral service for McLean was held at the school football stadium because there was no other venue big enough to accommodate the thousands of people who wanted to formally say goodbye.
During the service Chaplain John Knox spoke of McLean's all to familiar headwear. "[He always had] that big smile that lurked under the towering cowboy hat." That cowboy hat sat on his casket Tuesday… with his fellow SWAT team members kneeling around it in prayer and reflection.
Sergeant McLean, 38, was heralded as a determined and loyal civil servant. "In the case of Lance he made sure that evil did not prevail that day, and like heroes of the past he stepped up to the plate and made sure good prevailed. God bless you Lance and God bless your family."
The town of Hico and Tiger Stadium were home for McLean. For years he played football on the field that on Tuesday was lines with American flags in his honor. "I know that God loves Lance. I know that God was not surprised by the evil act that took him from us. God is sovereign and I know that the one that is responsible for this evil act will have to answer to Almighty God."
Sergeant Lance McLean was buried in Erath County. He leaves behind a wife and two special needs children.
