Fund Set Up For Elderly Texas Couple Attacked By Bees

POSSUM KINGDOM (CBSDFW.COM) - An elderly North Texas couple continues to recover after being attacked by a swarm of aggressive bees.

Stanley Whitehead and his wife, Nancy, were attacked after accepting a job to help the Possum Kingdom Chamber prepare for an annual barbeque and chili cook off.

It was one week ago when the couple, both in their sixties, were removing scrap in a field behind the Possum Kingdom Chamber building. Stanley reportedly turned over a large piece of Styrofoam and disturbed a hive of Africanized bees.

As the bees attacked Stanley, Nancy went to his aide. While both were seriously injured, Nancy was in far greater distress. After sustaining hundreds of bee stings the pair was taken by CareFlite helicopter to a Fort Worth hospital.

Mr. Whitehead was treated and is now back at his home in Mineral Wells. Mrs. Whitehead however was critically injured. Her condition has improved since first being hospitalized, but Nancy receiving dialysis to help her kidneys resume normal function.

Officials with the Possum Kingdom Chamber say the medical emergency has created a dire financial situation for the couple.

A fund has been set up to help the couple with their medical and living expenses. Anyone wanting to help can drop off of send a donation to the account of 'James S. Whitehead for the benefit of Nancy Whitehead.'
