Fun & Reflection For Families Of Fallen Heroes
GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - A special weekend in North Texas is wrapping up for hundreds of families. They all came to town from around the nation, but are departing from DFW International Airport on Monday. Each of the families have lost a loved one who served in the military.
The holidays can be a particularly difficult time for these families. This past weekend was meant to brighten up the season.
This is the eighth year for the Snowball Express program. About 1,800 children and spouses from across the country were in the DFW area to participate in a weekend full of events, including the Walk of Gratitude in downtown Fort Worth. The walk allows the families to reflect on the loved ones that have been lost.
The familes also got an opportunity to play games and visit the Fort Worth Zoo.
Snowball Express organizers said that the annual event is aimed at giving hope to these families, and providing some happy memories during a tough time.
"It is what I look forward to every single year," said Braelyn Mintzlaff. Her father was killed in 2006 while he was serving in Iraq. "It's like the highlight of my year, and it really brightens up the holidays, for a time that's normally really hard without my dad."
While there was a lot of fun, those who attended said that the all expenses paid trip means much more. "It's like a feeling event," said Brandi Anderson. "You get to be with people who understand what you've gone through and understand what it is. So, you can talk to them, and they don't say 'I got it' and they don't really get it. They understand."
