Full-Scale Disaster Exercise In North Texas City
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Today residents in Denton are probably hearing the words, "This is a test. This is only a test." The City of Denton is conducting a full-scale emergency drill.
The disaster exercise, at C.H. Collins Stadium, involves various departments from across the city. City spokeswoman Lindsey Baker says the exercise will include an event reacting to storm season.
"There are actually UNT students and others who are here who are in Moulage makeup, so they look like actual victims of a severe weather incident," she explained. "There will be lots of injuries. There will be a lot of fire and police presence out here, trying to recue people and extricate people from fallen debris."
The mock victims will be transported from the scene by ambulances and helicopters to several participating hospitals in real time. Baker said anyone in the area might see, "…a lot of police and fire presence. So there might be some cause for concern, but there is no need for that whatsoever. It is just a drill."
The purpose of the drill is to give hands-on experience to City of Denton and Denton Independent School District employees and test city emergency response plans and procedures.
"These types of drills give us the opportunity to work together before a major incident occurs to ensure we are trained and ready," Emergency Management Coordinator Michael Penaluna said.
The disaster exercise, that began at 10:00 a.m. and runs until 1:00 p.m., will also include a mass casualty incident at a sporting venue.
