Frisco Votes To Oppose High Voltage Power Lines
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) -The Frisco City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a resolution opposing proposed routes for high voltage power lines.
Dressed in white T-shirts, hundreds of Frisco homeowners from more than two dozen communities spilled out of council chambers into the lobby outdoors.
Residents overwhelmingly opposed the plan, concerned about the potential impact on their health and home values.
The city's power provider, Brazos Electric, has proposed two possible paths for the lines – one down Main Street, another down Stonebrook Parkway.
The city estimates either would directly impact thousands of current residents.
"We have a problem with that. We have a serious issue with that. There's better ways to do this," said Mayor Maher Maso.
The city is working with a consultant to identify alternate routes, including one hugging the southern city limit.
"We would use Army Corps of Engineer land, floodplain. It's less intrusive to residents," said Mayor Maso.
Brazos Electric already requested permission to build on Corps land in July.
The Corps denied the request because of the risk to wildlife and the area's natural beauty.
The mayor said the city would also research whether these lines could be buried and whether they are in fact needed.
Brazos Electric did not return calls, but the city says, the company is working with them to try to find a solution that works for everyone.
