Frisco Voters Reject Collin County Arts Funding
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - The future of the Collin County arts project is now uncertain after voters in Frisco decided to pull funding during this past weekend's elections. The issue drew in a record turnout at the polls, and the difference was just 600 votes.
Voter turnout in Frisco was just over 18 percent, the highest for a municipal election in 14 years.
Roughly 53 percent of voters decided to revoke the city's authority to sell $16.4 million in bond money that would have gone toward funding the Arts of Collin County project. Plans for the project include a performance hall and a 100-acre park in Allen.
The cities of Allen, Plano and Frisco had partnered to raise funds for the project. Now that voters in Frisco have rejected the idea, that leaves Allen and Plano to figure out how they will make up Frisco's share.
City leaders are expected to discuss what will happen to the project next.
One option is to see if those funds can be raised through private donations. Another idea is to have the other two cities increase their contributions.
