Frisco Council Rejects Exide Plant Cleanup Plan
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - More than 100 employees of the embattled Exide battery recycling plant packed Frisco City Hall Tuesday night in an attempt to save their jobs.
The workers asked the city council to help the nearly 50-year-old plant make needed improvements under the same zoning laws as when it was opened in 1964, a move many in the community oppose.
Many Frisco residents were also on hand, demanding the city close the plant.
The 1.5 mile area around the facility is one of just 16 places in the nation that exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency air quality standards for lead.
Late Tuesday the council rejected Exide's request, and said they would begin the process that will shut the plant down legally.
The company says it will now seek legal action to keep the plant open.
