Frisco Considers Extending Alcohol Sales Until 2 AM
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - Come midnight at Frisco bars and restaurants, the alcohol stops flowing.
Customers get up and leave, according to Ryan Fairbanks, the owner of Tailgaters Sports Bar and Grill, "they drive five minutes south to Plano and continue drinking until 2:00am."
Fairbanks is in favor of extending the hours he can serve beer, wine, and other alcoholic drinks until 2 a.m. The current law cuts off those sales at midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. on Saturdays.
The Frisco City Council is considering whether to put the issue on the November ballot and allow voters to make the final call on this issue.
"I think it is long overdue," said Fairbanks.
However, residents, through the years, have been reluctant to that change. Six years ago, voters turned down extending the hours of alcohol sales. Since that time, the city has grown by 40 percent.
Life-long resident Jo Hooper says people are moving to Frisco is record numbers because of the schools, the neighborhoods, and because the city is different.
"There is something special about Frisco and not having 2:00 a.m. alcohol sales in this area is something that makes us unique," she said.
What also makes Frisco unique, is that the Dallas Cowboys have named the city it's new home. Construction is underway on the team's new headquarters and entertainment district, and across the street there are plans for another major multi-use development.
Frisco Mayor Maher Maso says several of these new developers have recently asked the city to reconsider its midnight cut-off.
"I don't have a long list in front of me," said Maso. "But I've heard enough of it over the years, and it has seemed it have picked up lately."
Mayor Maso supports the idea of allowing the voters to decide once again.
