Friends Doubt Messages Are From Missing Fort Worth Girl
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW) - Shortly after a facebook update was posted on Jessica Smith's wall, a close friend received a text message purported to be from Smith.
11-year-old Katy Chitwood had texted Smith's phone several times asking if she was okay, and on Friday she received a reply from Jessica Smith's phone number. The message read, "I'm fine just don't worry about me."
"That doesn't sound like something she would say," said Lisa Chitwood, Katy's mother. "I also asked my daughter and she said,'That's not Jessica."
Jessica Smith spent several nights at the Chitwoods home, and recently attended Katy's birthday party.
The facebook update that was posted to Jessica Smith's wall saying she was okay generated 58 comments, mostly from concerned friends asking where she was.
Fort Worth police remain vigilant in their search for the missing 11-year-old and her mother, Kimberly Smith, including investigating a report of a sighting at a fast food restaurant in southeast Fort Worth. A customer spotted a mother and daughter who matched the description of Kimberly and Jessica Smith. Police checked the surveillance tape inside the store but could not identify the mother and daughter.
Police remain tight lipped information about the case, other than to say they are continuing their search and hoping for the best.
Friends tell CBS 11 Jessica Smith sought help from a counseler at school just before she disappeared.
"She would come outside and tell me there's a lot of family drama and she doesn't want to go inside," said Tammy Vu, who lives across the street Smith's Fort Worth home.
Jessica and her mother were last seen at their home in the 7300 block of Indiana Avenue in Fort Worth on Monday night.
Jessica is 5 feet 1 inch tall, weighs approximately 120 pounds, has brown eyes and straight brown hair. She regularly wears glasses, as seen in her photos, but is not believed to have had them when she was abducted.
Chitwood said without her glasses, Jessica Smith is noticibly cross-eyed.
42-year-old Kimberly Smith is 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds. Kimberly has a tattoo of a cross on the back of her neck, and another decorative tattoo on her back.
Kimberly is believed to be driving a 2007 silver Mazda CX-9 with the Texas license plate BMZ-390. The car has tinted windows and a pink and green Harley-Davidson decal in the rear window.
