Friends Baffled By Lawyer's Shootout With DPD Police

DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Clean up continues at a luxury high rise Dallas apartment complex the day after a deadly police shootout played out in the lobby.

Friday morning, crews replaced windows and a section of brick pavement damaged when officers opened fire on prominent local attorney Michael E. Schmidt.

Dallas police say Schmidt fired first at them early Thursday morning, in the lobby of the Glass House Apartments after calling to report a burglary.

Sources tell CBS 11, his 11-year-old daughter was with him, but police say she was out of the sight of officers and wasn't hurt in the shooting.

Friends say they aren't sure what would have prompted this behavior from this well known, respected attorney.

"Never have I ever thought anything like this would happen.  This is out of character for him, I just wonder if he crack under pressure or what," said  friend Ted Lyon.

Without commenting on what may have led to Schmidt's behavior, his fellow attorneys and friends at Schmidt Law released the following statement to CBS 11 news expressing their sadness over his death:

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and law partner Michael Edward Schmidt.  Michael had an enormous heart for his family, friends and clients.  For decades he represented the victims of wrongdoing in law courts across the country, achieving much success for his clients and for members of his firm.  He was a warm, generous and loving person.  He will be greatly missed by many.  Those working at his law firm will continue to fight for the rights of victims of wrongdoing, just as Michael had done."
