FreedomWorks Sponsors Texas School Choice Rally
AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - The national conservative group FreedomWorks is sponsoring a school choice rally at the state Capitol.
The grassroots organization helped spur tea party candidate Ted Cruz to an victory in Texas' U.S. Senate race last summer.
Saturday's gathering features speeches by its president, Matt Kibbe, as well as state Sen. Dan Patrick.
Patrick, himself a tea party favorite and Republican from Houston, chairs the Senate Education Committee. He has long clamored for increasing school choice.
Patrick is sponsoring a bill to expand charter schools statewide and a voucher plan allowing parents to use state funding to pull their kids out of struggling public schools and send them to private or religious ones.
The charter school bill cleared the Texas Senate. But the voucher plan faces longer odds on becoming law.
