4 Teens Injured In Burleson Explosion
BURLESON (CBSDFW.COM) - A backyard explosion at a home in Burleson Wednesday afternoon injured four teenagers.
The boys were lighting gasoline on fire, when they caused the blast, said Burleson Fire Marshal Stacy Singleton.
Teams of paramedics on Careflite helicopters rushed one young boy, then another into Parkland Hospital with serious burns. The two other teens followed in ambulances.
"He's hurt really, really bad. So, we need a lot of prayer," said Donna Singleton.
She said, her 13 year old nephew, the most critically injured victim, was burned on over 80 percent of his body. His 17 year old brother, Nick Russell, was also hurt.
According to family, both lived in the home on the 400 block of SE Gardens and started the fire there with friends, 18 year old Shawn Dean and another 13 year old, while their father was at work.
"The father was just screaming and yelling, saying 'his boys, his boys'," said Stacy Slack, who witnessed the scene.
Singleton said the four boys had been pouring gas on the ground and lighting it, when they caused a flash fire.
"They went to pour more gas on the ground and it flashed back on them. The one that's critically injured - he's the one that was doing the pouring of the gasoline," he said.
One boy's clothes caught fire. "They threw him on the ground and were rolling him around – like stop drop and roll – what they learned in school," said Singleton.
Friends say the father of the two boys was so panicked he got into an accident racing home.
Witnesses say he told them his family has already been through more than they can bear.
"Just crying, saying he's been fighting cancer, stage 4 cancer, and he's getting better and now his kids are dying." said Slack.
Parkland Hospital has not provided an update on the boys' conditions.
