FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – He'd just cashed his first check from a new job, but a local teenager never got to spend it.
Someone shot and killed the 18-year-old Chaz Gilley as he rode his bike along East Berry street in Fort Worth. His mother says, she can't think of any motivation, except for the check he had just cashed a mile away.
Mornings are the hardest for Chesala Markham. "I cling to his teddy bear, and I put the shirt that he was wearing Friday on the teddy bear--because he changed before and it still smells like him," says and emotional Markham.
Her son, Chaz Gilley had just moved into her East Berry home, to start a new job in Fort Worth.
"Somebody decided my son wasn't worth living, they played God. For what we don't know why. We just want to know why?"
Fort Worth homicide detectives remain tight lipped as they try to answer that question--Markham says the teen had no enemies, he hadn't yet made friends here. She says he did have money in his pocket after cashing his first pay check.
"Maybe he was targeted because he was so small, and an easy target to rob," says Markham.
What she'll remember is how big he loved. Those who loved him, remembered Chaz at a candlelight vigil in Mansfield. The park where Chaz went on a first date with the love of his short life. "He was such a loving person," commented boyfriend Jose Manriquez.
Wearing her son's ring, the self-described mamma bear is determined to find him justice. "Do not let my son go without knowing who done this to him. Please help us so they can't do this to anyone else's family."
