Fort Worth Police Shoot Suspect After Chase
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Authorities in Fort Worth are investigating a shooting that involved a police officer. The incident happened just after 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning in the northern part of the city.
The incident first began when officers attempted to stop a vehicle near the intersection of the North Freeway and Carver Avenue. When the driver refused to pull over, a chase ensued. That vehicle crashed near the intersection of Northeast 28th Street and Deen Road, but nobody was injured and the car took off again.
The car ultimately stopped in the parking lot of a Carnival Food Store near the intersection of Northeast 28th Street and North Main Street. That is where the female driver and male passenger exited the vehicle and began to flee on foot. Officers chased the suspects and arrested the male a short distance away.
The female driver, however, exited the vehicle with a gun. As officers pursued her, shots were fired. The female was struck by an officer and transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition. Witnesses said that it looked like the 42-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen. "I was freaking out because people were screaming," said witness Ramiro Prieto. "Everything popped off so quick."
Authorities are still trying to investigate the details of what happened, and were unable to say how many officers shot at the armed woman, or how many times she had been struck. "Anytime we have a critical police, incident and there's a gun involved, obviously, it's a very serious situation," said Cpl. Tracey Knight with the Fort Worth Police Department. "The officers are trained. We know that this is a highly populated area."
As is routine procedure, the officer or officers who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
