FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The Fort Worth Police Officers' Association filed a grievance Tuesday against the Fort Worth Police Department claiming unqualified lateral entry of officer candidates.
The association said its board of directors "became aware of violations of the Meet and Confer Agreement with Fort Worth PD regarding the hiring of lateral entry officers that did not meet the minimum requirements at the time of application to the FWPD."
In a statement the Fort Worth Police Officers' Association's Board of Directors said:
"It's extremely disturbing to find out that command staff were made aware of the potential violations of the agreement as several applicants did not meet the minimum requirements and instead ordered background personnel to put the unqualified applicants into LEO Class #5 and knowingly violate the agreement."
This is the official grievance:
Fort Worth Police Department spokesperson Mark Povero released the following statement on the matter:
"Because of an active internal affairs investigation involving accusations documented in a recent grievance filed by the Fort Worth Police Officers Association, the Fort Worth Police Department is unable to comment on the circumstances leading up to the filing. There is, however, a fundamental difference in interpretation of specific language contained in the Meet and Confer contract in regards to the hiring of Lateral Entry Officers. The police department welcomes the grievance to clarify language that could be interpreted differently."
