Fort Worth Plans Food & Wine Festival
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Fort Worth may be known as Cowtown, but a new event has just been announced that could spread the city's reputation well beyond the rodeo. The city is planning for the first ever Fort Worth Food & Wine Festival. The weekend event is scheduled for March 2014 at Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth, along with a few other venues.
As some good old cowboy cooking heated up in the kitchen of downtown's legendary Reata, festival co-owner Russell Kirkpatrick told about how the upcoming event got its start. "Realized that there was a demand for Fort Worth talent, Fort Worth chefs. Realized that there wasn't anything in Fort Worth that would capitalize on showcasing that kind of talent," he said.
Local foods will be highlighted during the big event. "The 'eating local' movement is so much more than just eating local," Kirpatrick explained. "It's spending locally. It's shopping locally. It's sourcing locally."
One place in Fort Worth that is really embracing the local trend is the Artisan Baking Company. "Nice and fresh," said owner Gwin Grimes. She has a passion for baking and cooking with seasonal and organic ingredients, and it shows. Her business started almost seven years ago at the Cowtown Farmer's Market. Staying local continues to be at the heart of her craft. "When you buy, say, an onion at the grocery store, the farmer is only going to get about 10 percent of the sales price. If you buy this onion at the farmer's market, guess what? They get 100 percent."
But buying local is just one of many things expected to be showcased at the Fort Worth Food & Wine Festival next year. Those involved are excited to show hungry fans -- here in North Texas and across the nation -- how diverse and delicious the food can be in Fort Worth.
