FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - A string of early morning vacant home fires in a historic south-side neighborhood of Fort Worth has neighbors and investigators on edge.

The first blaze happened on the 1100 block of Verbena around 5:45 a.m. Fifteen minutes later crews were dispatched just a few blocks over to the 900 block of Illinois. Flames and smoke at the second fire burned an entire home to the ground and charred through half of the house next to it.

"It's got to be an arsonist," speculated Lemmons Robert, who lives in the area. "It's got to be. Yeah I'm convinced of that."

Veronica Rodriguez and her husband had just purchased the home that burned on Verbena Street. They intended to fix it up and move their family in.

Now that the house and the materials to fix it are a total loss Rodriguez said their plans are ruined. "We need to start from scratch now that everything is gone."

Neighbors in the area fear the fires were no accident and they are worried it will happen again. Robert said, "eventually someone will get hurt."

Fort Worth fire investigators will not confirm that the fires were the work of arsonist -- they will only say that is one of the things they are looking into.
