FORT WORTH (CBS11) - Sources tell CBS11 News the injured officer suffered three gunshot wounds and underwent surgery.

Those wounds to Officer Matt Pearce are in the mouth, leg and upper shoulder after police say he was shot by Ed Russell McIver, Sr. before McIver was shot and killed by officers.

He was conscious when he was rushed to JPS Hospital and his bullet proof vest may have saved his life.

The officer is out of surgery but is still in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

Sources say the officer is heavily sedated.

Dozens of his fellow officers wait for more word tonight outside the hospital.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price spoke about meeting the officers wife.

"I visited with his wife just a little while ago she is incredibly strong woman and she wanted everyone of your lifters and readers to understand that she feels their prayers," says Mayor Price.

A local restaurant has donated food for the police department staff  thathave camped outside the hospital.
