Fort Worth Neighborhood Set For Wal-Mart Showdown
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Opposition is expected to surface Tuesday night as the Fort Worth City Council considers a plan by Wal-Mart to build a new Neighborhood Market at the site of an old church building.
A battle has begun to brew as the council considers a request for a zoning waiver that would allow a Wal-Mart project to move forward at Berry and Hemphill.
Opposition for the project comes from the South Hemphill Neighborhood Association.
According to association president Fernando Florez, one part of the project would ruin the urban village plan for the area.
"To allow them to have a parking lot right there, adjacent to Berry Street, that would destroy the plan and that's what we're against," he said matter-of-factly.
But Florez said the neighborhood association isn't totally against the project and right now are trying to get Wal-Mart to revise their plans.
"The door is still open for Wal-Mart to make some concessions, to agree to the proposal that we left on the table," he said. We have not heard anything from them."
The city council postponed the item at it's meeting earlier this month.
