Fort Worth Man Gets Life Sentence For Murder
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A jury in Tarrant County on Thursday morning took only 36 minutes to convict a Fort Worth man of murder. Marquise Brooks was found guilty of robbing and shooting 25-year-old Kevan Dunlop, a Tuskegee University graduate who had planned to go to law school.
The shooting took place on January 6, 2011. Dunlop was at an apartment in east Fort Worth playing video games with friends when the apartment's owner was visited by a man. The apartment owner and the man had previously been involved in a drug transaction. As the man went to leave, three of his cohorts burst into the residence with guns, demanding money.
Dunlop was shot once while trying to hide in a closet, then two more times while face-down inside of the closet. Two other men were also shot. They survived the attack. A fourth victim was injured after jumping from a second-story window to escape the gunfire.
Brooks was the second of four suspects to be prosecuted in this murder case. The 23-year-old received an automatic life sentence with no possibility of parole after prosecutors waived the death penalty. The other suspects include Floyd Myles, James Jones and Nathaniel Redic. Myles had reached an agreement to serve 35 years in jail in exchange for his testimony. Cases against Jones and Redic are pending.
