Fort Worth ISD's Only Superintendent Pick Withdraws Nomination

UPDATE (March 1, 2015) Dr. Boyd's letter to Fort Worth ISD's School Board

I want to thank you for considering me for the position of Superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School District. It was an honor to be named as the lone finalist and I appreciate your time and dedication to the twenty-one day vetting process.
I entered this process knowing that Santa Fe Public Schools is one of the fastest improving districts in New Mexico. Through the collective effort of our students, families, staff and community over the last two and a half years, Santa Fe has realized improvements along a wide range of achievement indicators. Overall, more students are achieving at or above grade level in both reading and math and fewer students are dropping out of school. This year alone, Santa Fe achieved its highest enrollment in our public schools, with more families than ever trusting us for their children's education. We have implemented many new reforms and initiatives to drive student achievement forward, and with our current success, we know we are on the right track to becoming the best district in the state.
Over the past few weeks, I could not have anticipated the outpour of support from Santa Fe stakeholders – from students and families, to teachers and staff, school board members and members of our broader Santa Fe community. They have expressed a clear and unyielding desire for us to continue to move this work forward together. They recognize the progress and momentum that is happening here in Santa Fe and want to ensure that our collective vision for our students continues forward on a steady trajectory. I was especially touched by the outreach from students who have experienced the positive changes in our classrooms first-hand.
Throughout this vetting process, I have shared my commitment and respect for the process to run its due course. During this time, the Santa Fe community has helped me to realize that the timing is not right and that we need to continue forward and not lose momentum for the sake of our children. While it was a difficult decision, I respectfully withdraw my candidacy for the position of Superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School District. I appreciate all the courtesy and hospitality that you and your staff have extended to me and I wish you the best as you move forward with your decision-making for the Fort Worth district.
Sincerely,

Joel D. Boyd, Ed.D.
