Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Fires Back At Lt. Gov. Patrick

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Fort Worth ISD superintendent Kent Scribner has fired back against calls for his resignation.
"I respect the lieutenant governor's opinion, but I also respectfully disagree," he said.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick held a press conference shortly before the regular school board meeting Tuesday attacking Scribner about new transgender guidelines. The policy wasn't on the meeting's agenda, but Lt Gov. Patrick's comments helped attract hundreds of people hoping to weigh in.
Scribner spoke before a crowd that filled not only the board room, but a nearby overflow space, to capacity. "When we create a supervised, safe, and respectful place, everyone's privacy and dignity is honored," he told those gathered. He also defended a requirement that teachers acknowledge a student's preferred gender, potentially against a parent's wishes.
"Unfortunately, not every child comes from a safe and supportive home," Scribner said.
Fort Worth resident Julia Keyes spoke in opposition to the guidelines, objecting they weren't discussed more publicly. "Taxpayers and parents should be outraged at the shocking violation and breach of the public trust. Get back to education, repeal the policy," she urged.
Several members of the transgender community also spoke, at times drawing tears in audience.
"I attempted suicide once and contemplated it my entire high school career," said Finn Jones.
The school board was not allowed to take action or even discuss the issue because of its absence on the agenda. Several members, though, did express support for Scribner and the guidelines on social media.
