Fort Worth Golfers Helping Fight Breast Cancer
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) -- Dozens of people hit the golf course today to help Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Monday marked the 10th anniversary of Woody's Golf Tournament, which was held at Pecan Valley Park in Southwest Fort Worth this year.
This was Marshall Artho's sixth year to play in the tournament, but for him it was more than just a game.
"Just giving back makes you feel good, especially knowing someone who has been through it," Artho said. "Maybe it's playing golf but it's all for a good cause."
Artho took off work Monday and took part in Woody's Golf Tournament to support his friend, John Hinkle, and a cause that means a lot to him. "My wife had breast cancer for about eight years before she passed away," Hinkle said. "She was 28 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she passed away when she was 36."
Hinkle's wife, Donna, died in 2007. The couple's daughter Gabrielle was only one.
"We talk about her, and she sees pictures and videos and stuff like that," Hinkle said, "and we try to keep her memory alive with her."
Now five, Gabrielle is too young to remember her mother, but that isn't stopping her from helping with the tournament. Her father, who co-owns Woody's Bar and Grill, started it nearly a decade ago.
"It does help to feel like you are at least doing something," he said.
About 85 people took part in the event, which raised nearly $10,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
"That goes to help families who are going through it, to help them with treatment and also to get the word out," Hinkle said. "Every year they come out with new drugs and new treatments and therapy so hopefully if we push on we can get a cure."
It's a message these golfers are helping to drive home to others.
"Anything you can give back, when you lose a loved one like John did, it's just something that's easy to do," said nine-year participant Garry Mendenhall.
Since its start, Woody's Tournament has raised more than $75,000.
