Fort Worth Fireworks Show Sparks Grass Fire

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The Fort Worth Fourth fireworks show was suspended halfway through after debris from the show caused a grass fire late Thursday night. The delay lasted for more than 10 minutes.

The Fort Worth show was one of the biggest in the state, thanks in large part to Japan. To mark 25 years as sister cities, the City of Nagaoka gave Fort Worth close to $100,000 worth of Japanese fireworks. Mark Wagner with Extreme Pyrotechnics put on Thursday's show. He said that those Japanese fireworks are rare in the United States because they are so expensive. "We have a lot of stuff that I've never seen," Wagner said, "It ought to be interesting."

Interesting indeed. Fire trucks could be seen racing to the resulting grass fire's flames from across the river.

The blaze was under control shortly after it began and the rest of the fireworks show continued as planned. Most of the crowd that packed onto the banks of the Trinity River in downtown Fort Worth waited patiently for the show to resume.

Thursday was a busy night for the Fort Worth Fire Department. The downtown fire was just one of at least 11 grass fires that crews battled.
