Fort Worth Event Helps Expectant Moms In Need
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A citywide baby shower is taking place Friday in Fort Worth. The Cowtown Cradles Community Baby Shower benefits the March of Dimes, and helps provide basic child care items for expectant mothers in need. "What we do is collect baby items, either gently used or brand new, and then we distribute them to various agencies," said Lakeshia Brown with the March of Dimes.
Volunteers cheered as people started dropping off their donations at 6:00 a.m. Friday morning. Before the sun was even up, organizations and folks from across the community brought baby items by the truckload.
The 287 Cruisers motorcycle club usually rides around DFW for fun, but on Friday they were riding for babies, bringing large packages of diapers to the Fort Worth event. "We like riding motorcycles, but we also like to give back to the community," said Reggie 'Blade' Savage.
"In the last five years, we've probably donated more than $1 million worth of products to March of Dimes," said Nekerral Polk with Alpha Phi Alpha.
These donations will help expectant mothers like Claudia Veloz. She is enrolled in the Comenzando Biene program, a bilingual prenatal education curriculum designed by March of Dimes and provided through Catholic Charities Fort Worth. "There's just a lot of mothers that have a low income," she said, "and it really helps."
"Our mission is to reduce infant mortality," said Denise Gonder with Catholic Charities Fort Worth, "so this curriculum is great for pregnant moms."
"I went to all the classes and they gave me two presents for being there," Veloz said. "It's really nice, because the money right now... money's tight." But because of March of Dimes, she will have a few less things to buy, and hopefully a healthier baby.
