Fort Worth Council To Review Police Benefits Of Paralyzed Officer
FORT WORTH (AP) -- The Fort Worth City Council is set to decide whether to retain a police officer who was paralyzed from the chest down in a 2003 line-of-duty shooting.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the council will vote Tuesday on extending leave-of-absence benefits for Lisa Ramsey and another injured officer. The council has voted each year since 2004 to extend Ramsey's benefits.
Ramsey says she will be forced to medically retire without the benefits due to periodic surgeries. She says she can still contribute to the force.
The police chief says keeping permanently injured officers employed takes up positions in a thinly stretched patrol budget. He says he hopes to offer Ramsey a civilian job with the department.
City staff recommends against extending the benefits because her injury is permanent.
