Fort Worth Carjacking Ends With Car Upside-Down In Trinity River
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The chase to capture a carjacking suspect came to end when the suspect plunged some 30 feet into the Trinity River.
Tom Hedrick said he was at a convenience store near Riverside and Lancaster when the suspect approached him, put a knife to his throat and then threw him out of his 2003 Buick Sedan.
Hedrick flagged down a car and called 911. Police were alerted and given a vehicle description. Officers spotted the vehicle along I-30 and a chase began.
Police gave chase for about 10 minutes when the suspect, Delvin Washington, 43, drove through a church parking lot and then down a 30 foot embankment into the Trinity River. The sedan landed upside down.
Washington was able to escape the vehicle and still managed to try to fight off officers.
"They were right behind him and they got down there pretty quick. It took about 7 or 8 of them who had to make a daisy chain to pull him up," said Lt. Tyson Cheeks of the Fort Worth Police Department.
Washington complained of back pain and was transported a hospital.
Hedrick's Buick was totaled but officers were able to recover a few of Hedrick's personal items from the stolen vehicle, including his iPhone. He is now looking for a new vehicle.
Washington faces charges of aggravated robbery and evading arrest.
