Fort Worth Boy Says Thanks To Police

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – On an otherwise quiet cul-de-sac in North Fort Worth, the presence of police cars, sirens, and a helicopter hovering overhead would trigger signs of trouble. But, not today. The officers had gathered to respond to a sweet 6-year-old's act of kindness with a real show of 'force'.
"I don't know," said the clearly overwhelmed—but, delighted—Sammy Daneman. "I thought it was just like cars pulled over."
When his first grade teacher at Betty Perot Elementary asked students to write a letter to a first responder, 6-year-old Sammy wrote a letter to police. It read: "Dear Police officer. Thank you for protecting me and my family and friends. I am also thankful that you put the bad people in jail. Is your job hard? Love, Sammy"
"When he showed me his schoolwork folder, this was in it," says Mom Julie Daneman, gesturing to the letter. "He is such a sweet, loving child," says Daneman. "I wasn't at all surprised. I think it's adorable and it's nice to hear that some of what we're saying is getting through: the cops are the good guys. They're the ones here to help us. They run to the trouble when we try to run away from it."
Daneman shared the sweet note and well, the rest is social media history. A neighbor forwarded the 'thank you' to Fort Worth police. So when Sammy arrived with Dad after school, he had quite a surprise waiting: the 6-year-old was made an honorary member of the force.
"Aw, this is what we do the job for," breathed an officer, clearly enjoying the afternoon.
As he and other officers responded to a child's 'thank you', with a 'you're welcome' straight out of a little boy's dreams.
"I never knew this was gonna happen!" exclaimed Sammy. And then as he jumped into his Mom's arms and put his new police hat on her head, he admitted, that this would be pretty hard to top.
