Former Rangers CEO Greenberg Agrees To Purchase Frisco RoughRiders
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) -- A partnership led by former Texas Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg has entered into an agreement to purchase the Frisco RoughRiders for a reported sum near $30 million.
The deal is contingent upon approval by the Texas League and Minor League Baseball, as well the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.
Mandalay Baseball has owned and operated the AA-franchise since its inception in 2003.
"This is an exciting time for us and RoughRiders fans across the Metroplex," said Greenberg. "The RoughRiders already have an outstanding operation and reputation and we are looking forward to further enhancing the fan experience at Dr Pepper Ballpark and throughout the community. The RoughRiders have a wonderful relationship with the Texas Rangers and we look forward to helping grow future players – and fans – for the Rangers."
Greenberg, who also owns the Rangers' Advanced-A affiliate Myrtle Beach Pelicans, was the former CEO and managing partner of the Rangers. Rangers Baseball Express, led by Greenberg, won an auction to purchase the team in 2010. Greenberg departed in 2011, leaving all aspects of the organization to Nolan Ryan.
Greenberg will serve as the Chairman, CEO and Managing Partner of the newly formed Frisco RoughRiders LP. He will be joined by Scott Sonju, the co-Managing Partner and President of the RoughRiders. Sonju will oversee the day-to-day operations of the team under Greenberg's leadership.
"Chuck brings so much to the table and we've put together a wonderful group of local partners," Sonju said. "This will not only be a seamless transition for all of our employees, sponsors and fans, but will also position the RoughRiders to thrive even more in the years ahead."
Rangers President of Baseball Operations Jon Daniels praised the affiliate, which has successfully partnered with the Rangers over the past 12 years, making the league playoffs eight times.
"We look forward to continuing that strong relationship with Chuck and Scott and their new ownership group. Our affiliation with Chuck's group in Myrtle Beach has been outstanding and we congratulate them on the Frisco purchase."
All terms of the deal are confidential.
Frisco Mayor Maher Maso applauded the deal, calling it "wonderful news for the citizens and businesses of Frisco and the entire region."
Forbes valued the RoughRiders at $28 million in 2013 -- the 11th most valuable minor league franchise -- noting that the team averaged more than 7,000 fans per game.
