Former Ranger Darren Oliver Named Special Assistant To GM
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- The Texas Rangers added to their staff on Thursday, hiring former pitcher Darren Oliver as a special assistant to the general manager.
While Jon Daniels says Oliver has been working with the club informally for several months, the relationship is now official.
"We are very happy to welcome Darren Oliver into an official capacity with the Rangers," said Daniels. "Darren will focus on pitching on both the major and minor league levels, and he will have a presence in Arlington and with our minor league affiliates. I also expect that he will be a valuable sounding board to our baseball operations group on all fronts."
Oliver retired after the 2013 season, collecting 118 wins in 766 games over a 20-year career with Texas, St. Louis, Boston, Colorado, Florida, Houston, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, and Toronto.
He spent his first six seasons with the Rangers, appearing in Texas' first ever playoffs series in 1996.
He returned to the team in 2000 after a short stint with the St. Louis Cardinals. Oliver then bounced around with five teams before returning to Texas in time for the 2010 and 2011 postseasons.
Oliver is a top-10 career performer in a number of Rangers categories, including wins (60, 8th), games started (137, 9th) and innings pitched (955.1, 9th).
