PLANO (1080 KRLD) - A former Plano school supervisor has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for ripping-off the school district.

As a security and fire systems manager, Kris Gentz was in charge of making sure the fire alarms across the Plano school district worked. Instead he was making sure he stuffed his pockets with more than $2.5 million in cash.

Gentz and two others created fake companies that were supposed to be inspecting alarms. Then he directed contracts to himself.

"He was in charge, he was in a position of trust and had the authority to approve contracts for the installation of alarm systems." said Federal prosecutor Andy Williams.

Williams says Gentz stole the money at the same time the district was cash-strapped and laying off teachers.

Gentz was once a reserve police officer in Frisco (unpaid volunteer) from June of 1984 till April 1, 1988, according to public officials there. Plano ISD hired him in August 2000.
