Former McKinney Employee Accused Of Stealing City Cash
MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - A former McKinney city employee pocketed more than $80,000 of the city's cash and got away with it for nearly three years, according to police.
Olga Chavez, 51, has been charged with third degree felony theft.
Investigators say Chavez stole portions of cash payments customers made to the city's utility billing department starting in November 2011. After she pocketed the money, she would void the cash receipts and adjust the customer accounts to cover up the difference, according to police. Investigators found $4,000 in voided receipts from 2011 and $30,000 worth of voided receipts for 2012 and another $30,000 for 2013. In all, police say she made more than 600 adjustments to customer accounts. However, the city says no customer accounts were negatively impacted.
Police started investigating when two of Chavez's co-workers alerted them to questionable transactions.
"When a city employee abuses the public trust of any kind, we take that extremely seriously. The extent of the alleged criminal activity and subterfuge in this case is particularly disturbing," said City Manager Jason Gray. "When we became aware of the possible theft, we took steps to aggressively investigate and notified the Police Department immediately. We are working diligently to put additional controls in place to prevent its repetition."
Chavez turned herself into the Collin County Sheriff, where she was was being held on $50,000 bond. She has bonded out of jail.
