Football Teams Would Rather Beat Heat Than Each Other
ROCKWALL (CBSDFW.COM) - It was the first game of the season for many high school football teams in North Texas tonight.
With temperatures near or above the 100 degree mark at kickoff, teams also found themselves struggling against the heat.
Rockwall Heath played their first game against Mesquite. But that wasn't the tough part. It was the heat which was still over 100 degrees before halftime.
Water girls fought to cool them off with an arsenal of Gatorade, water, ice towels and fans.
One player, who came to the bench, looked overheated and weak. As he bent over, one of the coaches threw an ice towel over the back of his neck.
"Drink! Drink! Drink!" The coach commanded him. And the player poured water into his mouth and spit it out.
"It's pretty hot. I'm not going to lie," said Mikela Arns. Arns is a student sports trainer at Rockwall
Heath.
"They haven't been in this hot weather in their uniforms," Arns said.
Players, who've been practicing in the heat had the added challenge of full uniforms this night.
"If I'm hot, I can only imagine how hot they are," Chasity Rooney said.
Rockwall paramedics were standing close by.
"We come out just to make sure everybody's okay and all that," Harrison Counts said.
But the players first line of defense were the coaches who were making sure players didn't lose
to the heat.
