Follow-up Mammograms Are Up At Baylor

A federal report shows doctors at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas prescribed a higher-than-average rate of follow-up mammograms. Baylor's follow-up rate was 14.5%, and the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid says anything higher than 14% may mean too many unnecessary screenings.

The Dallas Morning News reports Texas Health Presbyterian's rate is 8.6% -- just a little higher than the state and national averages.  Medical City Dallas's follow-up rate was only 5.4%.

Baylor's chief medical officer Dr. Paul Convery says the data could be a reflection of a good reputation and that the women who tend to go there also have a higher risk of breast cancer.
