Floodwaters Erode Apartment's Foundation In Granbury

GRANBURY (CBSDFW.COM) - An apartment building in Granbury was deemed unsafe because of a landslide and officials worry more evacuations are on the way.
Granbury Assistant City Manager Sherry Campbell-Husband says floodwaters eroded the Lake Front Apartment & Townhomes' foundation, which sits along the lake. She worries other buildings along the shoreline may face evacuation as well.
"We want to make sure we are acting out of an abundance of caution and getting those people out if that's appropriate," says Campbell-Husband.
She says the more than two dozen people displaced can seek shelter with the Red Cross in the area.
Two additional homes next to the original apartment complex were also evacuated, and Campbell-Husband says that number could rise.
"We want to make getting those folks out, at risk, out if that's the appropriate thing to do. That's why we have have structural engineers and rescue crews in from the state to help us makes those assessments," she says.
Officers are helping evacuate the people affected. They are allowing them back into their homes under one condition; they have 5 minutes to gather their belongings before leaving.
"It's horrible. It's just one of the parts of the job, especially for the guys helping these people grab their stuff and get out, they are seeing it up close and personal," says Sgt. Cris Brichetto with the Granbury Police Department.
Police say an engineer brought in to evaluate the property found the complex has continued to slip.
"It has moved since this morning so that is an indication it's not stable," said Police Chief Mitch Galvan.
Officers say they stopped escorting residents into the complex to retrieve belongings after the engineer deemed it unsafe.
"He said, 'Absolutely not. I wouldn't put anybody in that building.' So, we're gonna take his advice and keep everybody out," said Galvan.
The inspections will continue through the weekend.
