Flooding May Force Evacuations In Grapevine

GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - Residents who live in Grapevine may soon be forced to evacuate from their homes after the city's mayor signed a disaster declaration on Wednesday night, worried about possible flooding.

The biggest area of concern is at Denton Creek, located right along Grapevine Mills Parkway. Water is rushing through the creek right now, but the city is worried that the level could get higher and flood the surrounding area.

Grapevine Lake is already swollen after last month's rainfall, and is now even higher after Tropical Depression Bill put more water into the lake. The excess water feeds into Denton Creek.

If the creek were to flood, surrounding roadways could be covered by water, cutting off access to apartment complexes and townhomes in Grapevine. Sandbags are already in place at one apartment complex, piled on the ground to protect lower-level units.

If conditions become too severe, officials have the authority to evacuate people. The city has already started notifying residents who live in the area.

"We'll take measures once we are 100 percent certain that it's going there," stated Chief Darrell Brown of the Grapevine Fire Department. "We believe it will be in the next 24 to 48 hours, so we are doing everything we can to ensure we give them ample notice to have a way out before we evacuate those apartments."

The last time that it flooded in this part of Grapevine was in 1981, when none of the current development was around.
