First-Time Homebuyers In DFW Bucking National Trend

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - National statistics show the number of first-time homebuyers decreased by 35 percent last month.  But realtors in North Texas say it's a different story here.

Ebby Halliday realtors estimate about half of their buyers are first timers and they say that reflects a healthy market.

"Dallas has fared better than most other cities in terms of real estate and even, drilling down further, certain neighborhoods in Dallas like Lake Highlands, have even shown some appreciation," says Robin Moss Norcross with Ebby Halliday.  "We're still seeing a very healthy first time homebuyer population," she says.

Another factor that could be responsible for decreased home sales nationally is tighter lending standards.  The National Association of Realtors says loan underwriting standards are overly restrictive and could be holding back the economic recovery.
