LEWISVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - The first human case of the West Nile virus in Lewisville this year has been confirmed by health officials. And, on Wednesday night, the city will be taking steps to prevent any further spread of the disease.
According to Denton County Public Health, the person in question has been diagnosed with West Nile fever, a less severe form of the mosquito-borne illness. Officials added that they do not know where the resident contracted the disease, and no further details will be released in accordance with privacy laws.
The city has several crews which regularly inspect creeks and drains for potential mosquito-breeding sites, collecting samples and testing for West Nile virus. They found positive samples in traps just six days ago, located near the 200 block of Highland Drive and the 1200 block of College Parkway.
These were the 14th and 15th positive West Nile virus traps this year in Lewisville alone. However, this does not mean that the person who contracted the virus lives near one of these areas.
Lewisville and Flower Mound both have ground spraying scheduled for Wednesday night and Thursday night, however, they will not be treating the area near the West Nile fever patient's home. Rather, efforts will be focused within a half-mile radius of the two locations where those positive samples were discovered. The spraying begins at 9:00 p.m. each night.
