The intensity of the fire increased as crews were battling the blaze. Flames shot high into the sky. But firefighters were eventually able to extinguish the fire, and now remain on the scene to monitor for hot spots. "Once you set a mattress on fire, the density of the fabrics that make the mattress, sometimes they can smolder for hours and hours and hours, and it takes a lot of work, lot of manpower to actually get inside, sift through and make sure all those hot spots are out," said Jason Evans with Dallas Fire-Rescue.

Authorities on the scene believe that the fire started outside of the warehouse, in the rear portion of the building. Heavy equipment was brought in to demolish some charred walls for safety reasons. The exact cause of the fire is still not known.

A family of three people – a father, mother and young son – actually live in the warehouse, toward the back of the building on the second floor. They made the initial 911 call, unaware that the fire was burning right below their feet. The family soon found themselves surrounded by flames, however, everybody was able to be rescued through the use of ladders.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a minor injury.

Several nearby roads – including Fort Worth Avenue – have been closed while authorities conduct an investigation and crews clear the scene. Even some DART buses have had to be rerouted. So, plan ahead if your Wednesday morning travels take you through this part of Dallas.
