NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - As of Tuesday afternoon, it's confirmed that at least 11 people died and dozens were injured when tornadoes spun across North Texas on Saturday. In addition to the loss of life, as many as 1,450 homes were damaged or destroyed.
Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster in Dallas, Collin, Rockwall and Ellis Counties.
People across the metroplex, state and country are now asking what they can do to help those impacted by the deadly weekend storms.
To help those affected by the North Texas tornadoes CBS 11, TXA 21 and our sister Dallas Fort Worth CBS RADIO stations are teaming up with the Dallas Cowboys to support The Salvation Army's local disaster relief efforts. Money for the Salvation Army is being collected at the checkout stands of all North Texas Kroger grocery stores. Donations for Dallas tornado and North Texas flood relief can also be made online on the Salvation Army website.
Also, in Garland, the Mount Hebron Baptist Church is accepting food, clothing and toiletry donations from 10a.m. to 3p.m. The donations have filled six rooms in the church and are ready to be picked up by those affected by the tornado. In ROWLETT - A similar online clearinghouse for victims, volunteers and residents is available. The Rowlett, Texas: Tornado Relief 2015 website is designed "to facilitate community preparedness and recovery."
In GLENN HEIGHTS - Officials are asking people to "sign up, not show up" to volunteer to help. Information gathered after signing up on the city's webpage is meant to identify where individual assistance is needed most. Officials there say they are still "assessing the overall needs" of residents.
In DALLAS - The Dallas Police Association (DPA) has launched a special fundraising drive to assist officers and their families who were impacted by tornadoes. The Assist The Officer Foundation provides personal and financial assistance to officers facing serious injury, life-threatening illness or other catastrophic events. One-hundred percent of donations, through January 3, will be earmarked specifically for officers impacted by the severe weather and tornadoes.
In TEXAS and WORLDWIDE - The American Red Cross-North Texas Region is also working to help families in need of help after the storms. In addition to setting up shelters in various cities, the Red Cross is providing food, clothing and cleanup supplies for storm victims. Anyone wanting to volunteer or make a donation can call 800-RED-CROSS (733-2767), make a financial contribution on the Red Cross website, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief.
