Fight Brewing To Block Texas License For Illegal Immigrants

DALLAS (CBSDFW) - Though they may be here illegally, they could be able to get a Texas driver's license  as part of a White House plan that would give illegal immigrants deferred deportation.  And if that happens one Texas lawmaker wants to call for a special session to stop it.

State Representative Debbie Riddle (R-Tomball) who authored an Arizona style immigration bill for Texas, thinks that allowing illegal immigrants to legally drive on roadways would be slap in the face to the Texas legal system.

"If that's the case I think that most Texans are going to object to that" says Riddle.

As part of the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals Plan pushed by the Obama Administration, certain illegal immigrants gaining deferred deportation would also be able to get a work permit along with a temporarily social security card. These items would then allow the immigrants to acquire a Texas Drivers License, but Riddle  says she would do everything to stop that from happening.

"If that is the case then we will go to Greg Abbott our Attorney General and then we will go to the Governor and ask for a Special Session," says Riddle.

She goes onto state that she believes having illegal immigrants on Texas roadways could pose hazards for others.

"If you're not going to respect our laws and do what is necessary to be here legally then why should you respect any other laws...laws of the road or anything else" says Riddle.

Immigrant rights groups disagree with Riddle though and say that illegal immigrants who've been granted a deferment have proven themselves to be responsible law abiding citizens and should be given equal rights.

Last week, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer issued an executive order that would prevent illegal immigrants who qualified for deferred action from getting a drivers license.
