Ferguson Protesters Block Highway In Dallas

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Demonstrators hit the streets late Tuesday for a second night of protesting in Ferguson, Missouri. This follows a grand jury's decision to not indict the officer who shot and killed an unarmed teenager. Several people were arrested, as the National Guard works with police to combat violence.
President Barack Obama spoke about the situation, saying that he understands the anger, but there is no excuse for any chaos or destruction.
The protests fueled unrest in Dallas as well, with at least seven North Texans behind bars on Wednesday morning.
A crowd of around 200 people gathered Tuesday night at the Dallas Police Department's headquarters, chanting things like "hey hey, ho ho, these racist cops have got to go." The protesters marched through downtown and eventually made their way onto Stemmons Freeway, even blocking highway traffic at one point.
The seven arrests came from that roadway incident, although nobody was injured. Authorities identified those arrested individuals as:
- Clinton McBride, 23
- Mario Monroe, 23
- Abel Hadie, 20
- Elizabeth Clinton, 28
- Jonathan Adam, 24
- Shelby Schram, 23
- Dezmond Johnson, 18
While there has been much violence in Missouri, demonstrators in North Texas are not trying to send that message.
Alisha Taylor is a 19-year-old woman from Abilene who drove three hours east to be a part of the peaceful movement in Dallas. "It seems so hard right now, with all the riots," she explained Tuesday night. "People think that's the only way to get their voices heard. It's understandable, but we just have to take the upper hand in this fight."
