Female Driver Rams Balch Springs Firefighter With Car
BALCH SPRINGS (CBSDFW.COM) - Balch Springs Police are searching for a female driver who rammed a firefighter with her car, carrying the man for over 100 feet, before fleeing the scene.
On Jan. 23 around 8 p.m., Fire Marshal Frank Shafer was directing traffic at the scene of a multi-vehicle accident on northbound IH-635 at Lake June Road. As a result of the accident, all northbound lanes had to be closed.
As Shafer directed drivers towards the exit ramp, the dark-colored midsized sedan bumped him as it came to a stop. Shafer then directed the driver to pull to the side of the road and turn off her car.
"At that time, she looked at him through the windshield -- he was in front of the car -- and she accelerated the vehicle, striking Mr. Shafer, who was thrown up onto the hood of the car," said Lt. Mark Maret with the Balch Springs Police Department. "He was able, after approximately 100 or 150 feet, to swing his legs over to the side of the vehicle and roll off to the side, instead of sliding off the front and being run over."
Shafer suffered only minor injuries in the incident, but police are investigating it as an aggravated assault on a public servant.
"It appears she did it intentionally," said Maret. "The unfortunate thing right now is, we don't have a vehicle and we don't have her, so we don't know her mindset or reasoning for what happened."
According to police, the four-door vehicle should have sustained front-end damage. The suspect is described only as a black woman. The Balch Springs Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact Investigator Bird at 972-557-6014.
