Feds: 2 Plead Guilty In Military Recruiting Scheme
WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal prosecutors say two former U.S. military members from Texas have been sentenced for their roles in an alleged scheme among several soldiers that rolled up $244,000 in fraudulent recruiting bonuses.
The Justice Department says Grant E. Bibb of Eagle Pass was sentenced Thursday to a year and a day in prison, while Paul Escobar of San Antonio received a six-month term and six months of community confinement. Both were sentenced to three years of supervised release.
Prosecutors say the 41-year-old Bibb and the 32-year-old Escobar admitted to participating in a plan to collect referral bonuses on enlistees who joined on their own.
The recruiting incentive program started in 2006 and offers upward of $2,000 for referrals who enlist. At least three other men have pleaded guilty in the case.
