FC Dallas Head Coach Hyndman Stepping Down
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM/AP) -- FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman is stepping down just three years removed from leading the club to its only MLS Cup appearance.
Hyndman made the announcement on Friday in Frisco.
"I truly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the FC Dallas family for the last five years," Hyndman said. "After a lot of thought and consideration, I feel the time is right for me to step down as head coach of FC Dallas. I want to thank the Hunt family for their support and friendship, our players, coaches and front office for their dedication and effort during my time here, and especially the great FC Dallas fans."
After losing to Colorado in the 2010 MLS Cup, FC Dallas was swept in the first round of the playoffs the next year and was recently eliminated from postseason contention for the second straight year.
His 244 career points as a head coach are the most in FC Dallas history.
"My family and I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Schellas both as a coach and as a person, and we sincerely appreciate his contributions to the club over the last five-and-a-half seasons," said FC Dallas Chairman Clark Hunt. "We wish him well in the next chapter of his life, and he will be missed."
Hyndman's final home game will be Saturday against Seattle. FC Dallas ends the season on the road in San Jose on Oct. 26.
The 63-year-old Hyndman is 62-57-58 in five seasons. He spent 31 years as a college head coach, including 24 at nearby SMU, and was named the NCAA National Coach of the Year in 1981. Hyndman's collegiate teams missed the playoffs only once in 31 seasons.
Hunt says the team will begin searching for a replacement immediately.
